Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the only one meant for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are famous by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to book john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken 3rd-level domain names remained working.
